Try MagicJack for 30 days FREE! MagicJack is a small USB device that plugs into your computer and with a broadband/highspeed internet connection allows you to make all your local or long distance calls for free. I tried VOIP (voice over internet protocal) with Vonage for over a year. I was fairly well pleased, especially with the monthly bill of $35.
Oftentimes though the connection was less than desirable and finally I canceled the service.
Last April, just before a planned trip to visit my son, I saw an internet ad about a VOIP device called MagicJack. Since it offered a 30 day free trial I ordered it. It's a small USB device that easily fits into your pocket and works with any computer or laptop with highspeed internet access. You are assigned a phone number that remains yours and costs only $39.99 for the device and the first years service. Thereafter the annual cost for service is only $19.95!
I used it from California during my vacation and was amazed at how well it worked. Unfortunately, I got busy and forgot about it until last week. I hadn't used it in over six months and decided to try it again. And again it works like a charm. I ordered two more of them yesterday for Tracey and Dan/Alex. Instead of tying up our landlines I hope to make all or at least most of our outgoing calls using the MagicJack.
The only drawback is that there are no Iowa numbers available yet. So if you give you MagicJack phone number out, the caller will have to call long-distance to reach you. Unless they also get themselves a MagicJack.

New signs were finally hung today. Much bigger and more dramatic lettering for HomeRun Computers as well as signs for I-Wireless cellular service and CommSPEED wireless internet. MediaCom cable also wired us today for High Definition TV and Cable internet. We're online, and almost ready to rock & roll! Store is really starting to come together, it is absolutely fantastic. No doubt, going to be the best looking computer store in the midwest! I'm excited, wonder if it shows? :)
Display counter for our laptops with a pegboard to hang lots of peripherals and accessories.
The end table will be used to check-in and check-out service computers.
A 12' long counter so we can at last put all of our computers on display... No more having to run to the basement for them!
New Year's Eve: Most everything has been moved into the new location. Still have a lot of cleanup in the old store as well as reorganizing and preparations to do in our new store. We'll be working through the weekend and hopefully be ready for business on Monday (one day before my 60th birthday).
This is our storeroom/office area.
Entry way to the service/repair shop.
Another view of Audrey & Tracey's desks in the office area.
Service and repair parts shelves.
Workbench; room to work on five computers with plenty of room for more later if needed.
Christmas Eve: New glass & steel display desks are setup ready for computers.
Work shop pegboards are up, benches to follow next week.
New vinyl sign above check-in counter and window behind.
December 16th; I attempted to mount the wall murals I was so pleased with (see above post, wall murals), but quickly discovered that either I had no talent or it was simply an impossible task. I tried numerous times to get them pasted properly, but kept seeing wrinkles in the first panel, tried to straighten them, only to create new and more wrinkles.. finally I gave up and scrapped the idea. There's a couple hundred bucks down the drain! Damn! Oh well, live and (hopefully) learn.
Dave Glasgow and Dan Blanchard talking about how to make all this come together...
Signs are finished, awaiting the store front's finish to be mounted.
New HomeRun Computers logo sign. I miss my caracature.... oh well.
Window behind counter in place, waiting for our decorated glass...
December 12th; Progress continues: painting finished, electrical and lights are going up today. Carpet cleaner at work today. We should be ready to start setting up Monday of next week.
December 10th, 2008: Painting and trim finished in the sales area. Lights are being istalled. Carpet is to be cleaned this weekend and hopefully next week we can start moving in and setting up.
October 20th, 2008: Here are some photos of the construction work being done on our new store "On the Square" in Williamsburg...
Classroom area..
A new ceiling.
Larger windows for displays.
More electrical outlets to power the toys.
No more bright blue and purple!
Work is about a week behind schedule right now. I had hoped to be able to open the retail store the first of December, but it does not seem likely now.
This new location will not only be "On the Square" in Williamsburg, but have three times the display/retail area of our old store. In addition, the shop/service area is on the same floor connected by a double-door, no more having to run downstairs and all the way to the back... And reverse the trip when a customer needs me. Also the frontage on the square is a full 48 feet (two stores joined together), it'll be refaced completely and will undoubtedly be the best looking store in town. I'm excited and anxious to get it ready to open. Also, just in case I didn't mention it before, the rent is $175/month less than what I've been paying! And after some hard negotiating, I talked the landlord into paying for all the improvements, electrical, painting, new ceiling etc.. that they hadn't planned on doing initially.
